I have bred in the past (for food) Mice, Rats, Gerbils, Syrian Hamsters, Winter White Hamsters and Multimammate Mice.

I stopped with all but mice because -
Rats take a lot of room and tons of food
Gerbils breed too slow for feeders unless I really needed them for a fussy feeder (which I don't have)
Winter Whites again were slow breeders and my pair died of old age - I used the space for more mice!
Syrians breed slowly and you need to keep the adults seperatley, although the babies grew at a fantastic rate and by 4 weeks you had an adult mouse sized animal.
Multimammates were very unpredictable with breeding - you'd get millions of babies one month, then next month a big fight would break out and the colony would end up half eaten. I also didn't appreciate getting bitten for changing the water bottle!

I have used for food (not intended as food, but one thing or another meant that they got tried!) Pygmy Mice, Harvest Mice, African Pygmy Dormice, Spiny Mice (babies only)...

I have very un-fussy snakes, I think anything would be eaten by someone!

I mainly do rats now, still have a few mice ticking over. The multi's have basically stopped breeding now, but will start them back up just for pinks and fluffs for the lizards.

did think about doing lemmings but they seem to need lots of works rearing them.

I thought that rat pups were more fatty than mice of the same size? Which makes sense but not good if that is a snakes main size of rodent.

Also my mice don't freak when handled, they are extremly calm.

The idea I like about rats is that they get to adult mouse size quicker.

If I were to do any other prey I wouldn't do more rodents tbh, If I could I would like to do something with a completely different dietry value, such as birds.........but space/time/money rule that one out atm
