Nice pics! Your job sounds pretty ace - what do you do?

Also out of interest...to get a GCN licence, do you have to be applying for a specific reason? i.e. you will be disturbing/handling GCN's for defined work - or can you just apply for a general licence? As i've checked out, I think it was the English Nature website, and looked at their licence applications...and they ask for specific details of the work to be carried out.

Was just wondering as i've been looking at ecologist jobs (and others in a similar field) and some ask for the applicant to possess a GCN licence.

So, what i'm saying in a really roundabout way, is it something that you have to have 'earned' (as such) in previous work? Or can you just go on a day course and get a license that way?

Hi, I am a Consulting Ecologist.

With regards to licences, they are for want of a better word 'earned'. Natural England issue them for people involved in either conservation or scientific work with various species. It is expected that those applying will have at least 1 years experience of working with the species, usually as an accredited agent for someone already holds a licence.

For bats you are required to undergo a period of training and be signed off as competent by your trainer (mine took 3 yrs to get), but the majority of licences only require two signatures from professional people who will vouch for your competence working with the species involved. It is generally preferred if one of the referees is an NE licence holder.

Hope that helps Very Happy

That's brilliant, thanks! Makes a whole lot more sense now Laughing

I suspect that if I don't go the research route after graduation i'll end up in ecological consultancy or similar, so that info was really helpful. Thanks again! Very Happy

To clarify the post.......

To survey for and distrurb GCN's (this includes netting, trapping and searching using torchlite) you MUST have an Natural England licence.

If you do not hold one you are commiting an offence!!!!!!!
