Ok, then fair enough, ill wait until I get much more expericance. Im thinking (was thinking about getting them anyway) a viper boa or two, and they are apparently not the easiest, or should I say calmest of snakes, and the Boigas are a good idea, allthough I thought that cat snakes (boigas) are venomous, and are DWA, but maybe im incorrect...
Im having a look on boiga.co.uk now, so this should give me a better idea. Anyone know of any good places/sites to buy boiga, cos if I cant get em, theres no point in researching them lol.

Thanks

Mangroves are DWA but the rest of the boiga aren't. Some species are fairly nasty at night though as with all snakes you will get good and bad ones. Most places will get you boiga though obviously I will recommend my friends shop http://www.shropshire-exotics.co.uk/, they don't tend to be kept in all the time though.
Care is certainly more advanced than corns so you will need to do a lot of reading up, maybe a different snake first. To get a good chance of getting a nasty one then WC would be best, but then you've got the problems with non feeding, parasites, nose rubs, colds etc to cope with as well.
A FWC can also be a good choice but it certainly depends on the snake as I've seen dead tame ones.
Boigas are venomous but not really dangerous but you wouldn't want a bite off a big one, my cat eye tries to nail me everytime I disturb her and shes got me a few times, though I don't treat her like I'd treat venomous.
With your experience of only hoggies and corns then a boiga may be a big step unless its CB and feeding fine. There are other snakes that may also help, the GTP and ETB can be good choices as once they get adult you really don't want to get bit and tend to try to use hooks etc. Again care is more specialised but think about what snakes you like for now, don't really consider the venomous for a few years, get experience in other things first then you may find your tastes change or at least that you prefer vipers to elapids or whatever. There are so many unusual and more difficult snakes to get and care for without going front fanged venomous that you may never really want to take the risk.

I have to agree with Mikes points about everything here, the snakes he has mentioned are good animals to work with before entertaining and contact with real venomous.

I am currently in the application stage of my dwa, my papers are in and i am awaiting my inspection. It is extremely expensive with the vet in question asking for over £200 for an hour of her time. On top you have the license, insurance again over £300 and then all the upgraded vivariums, hooks, tongs, restraining tubes, bagger, I would say looking at a reasonable license price ie. £120 like mine your looking at around £1000 before you even think about fancy cages and plush rooms.

I think the best way for any keeper to learn is a few simple steps ~

1) Keep a varied range of non-venomous to gain general experience
2) The move onto harder to keep things, gtps, emmys ect
3) Start to work with things that can be challenging such as the above
4) Move into something slightly venomous such as boiga or fwc
5) Work alongside another private venomous keeper learning the ropes and gaining both knowledge and handling time
6) Start of with a medium sized sub-adult animals preferably copperhead that's feeding well, the last thing you want as a new keeper is to be force feeding your first hot.

I can assure you however you'll have fun with boiga, i did especially being bitten by nigrescens as it hurt alot, i had symptoms of a mild envenomation and the thing only chewed for a few minutes before not liking the cold water in the sink.

If you need any advice mate there are a few good keepers i know that would be willing to help. Call your council and see if there is anyone with a dwa around you, see what you can do mate but do not rush anything.

Ok then, I can actually get to that place in shropshire, but I think the ones that I like the most are the green cat snakes...However, shropshire exotics do have a boiga irregularis in stock, which grow to 3m, so they need a pretty big tank, am I right?
Also, does anyone know what size tank an adult green cat snake (boiga cyanea) would need, as I have a 12x12x18h" at the moment (obvuously not big enough for it for life) but it would be a start for a hatchling...
Thanks, Mike

I like to keep arboreal in large naturalistic setups so for me it would be a 30"W x 24"D x 48"H. Irregularis are nice boiga and yes they can get fairly big but are nice.

Richard and Mary and shropy are really nice, Got to know Rich quite well through my old boss. He will help as much as he can and if he hasn't got a green cat eye he'll probably be able to get you one.

There are no irregularis available for sale at the shop at the minute, but Im sure Rich can get you a cat eye if you explain your intentions.
If Im 100% honest I wouldnt even sell someone an FWC having only had experience with hoggies and corns, unless you had also spent time with other peoples snakes and gained experience with something a little quicker.

You can get very tame falsies (my 2 females are prime examples) but these animals arent much good in terms of DWA practice, and a falsie bite isnt something you want if you can avoid it!

The irregularis has gone I'm afraid. The only boiga in is a drapiezii, which is very calm but also not eating of its own accord yet.
Richard could certainly get the odd thing for you, but if you can make it down and want to see something a little more challenging then you could play with the amethystine's or small retics. Maybe the cave racer as well. Obviously you'd have to persuade Richard to let you see them and you'd have to be prepared for a nasty bite. So I don't think you'd be playing with anything the first time you came over. If you seem dedicated then he may let you after a while. Unfortunately you can't just let customers just get bit by things until you know them. Richard now lets me and Sean find out the hard way which ones are snappy.

And Tom, if you come down again you'd better introduce yourself so I know who I'm talking to. Always nice to meet new people.

Yeah that would be cool, Having said that im not that near lol. Im in Cheshire, so I couldnt come down just for like half an hour. Id defineately take a drapiezii, I think they look ace, but id want it to be eating really...
Also, another thing I could consider (I would imagine) are the ATBs...I know someone mentioned GTPs and ETBs before, but both seem to cost arround £350+ so theyre pretty expensive, whereas I could get an ATB for what, £100, maybe less...Id have to get a nice hook and some long feeding tongs though, what ever I get lol.
