too much hard work for me, as you need to seal the wood properly afterwards. (got nowhere to paint them without gassing my animals with fumes). _________________

I personally use melamine (contiboard) it is much easier as you do not need to seal the whole thing after, you just have to use silicone sealant on the joints. This is what mose vivs are made out off by what I have seen. _________________ Proud owner of one monster of an Iguana, and two of the cutest little Anoles you have ever seen. |

I use wooden vivs. For smaller vivs i use contiboard but for the big ones i use OSB.
It's cheap enough not to worry about sealing it (about £12 for an 8x4 sheet) and is reasonably weather proof anyway, which means it can handle a fair amount of humidity for about a year before i would worry about it being too weak to be safe. I end up paying £150 a year for 5 vivs (i re-use glass and heating) which is a figure i can cope with.
This weekend just gone i made a replacement stack for some of my retics. The stack dimensions are 6x3x7.5 feet with each viv being the same length and depth but a height of 18 inches (giving me a stack of 5 vivs). The wood is 18mm thick and i use 2 inch screws to secure them together.
Each viv is strong enough to take my biggest girl who weighs 165lbs and the whole stack takes a grand total of around 350-400lbs worth of snakes. It doesn't creak or bend, and i will be happy using it for some time without fear of collapse. I could never achieve this with conti-board without some serious re-enforcing. _________________ TFA
