Hi everybody,

I am thinking very seriously about getting a male bullsnake. Have been considering this for a while and met one in the flesh today who I think I might well buy after thinking on it for a week. Although he is under a year old, I want to plan for his ultimate adult viv size now- don't worry, I will not be housing him in anything too large in the mean time. He'll be kicking off in a 24x15x15 quarantine viv to start with. He is somewhere between 2 and 3 feet at the moment so I think this should be ok in the short term.

I realise ultimate adult sizes can vary quite a lot, but assuming he turns out fairly average, is a 48x18x18 viv going to be big enough, or do these guys need more space than that? I can go bigger if necessary.

I am in the process of converting a spare room into a snake room so I'm just trying to work out how much space to set aside for this guy.

While I'm at it, do people have strong views on heating for these guys? Was going to use an AHS all in one, but if people have reasons specific to this species for prefering old fashioned ceramics or heat mats I'd be interested to hear them.

Thanks in advance for any help Smile

Bull's can get over 7ft rarely granted but they can be a very big colubrid, heavy set as well! And I love their hiss! My mate Barry had a few you could hear 30+ft away from the other end of his garden, and the snake was ina brick built rep shed!!

I have never used an AHS and have heard mixed replies! I use ceramics in both bulb and trough set up and apart from replacing the wiring every few years and the odd thermostat I have never had the element go!" Some of my troughs are well over 10 years old! As your bull is a male I would say thats a 4x2x2 viv should be ample. If when adult its not quite big enough build a slightly larger one and then you have a ready made home for something else!!! BONUS!!!

Best of luck

Peter

I have a young Bull at the moment. I am currently setting up some 3'x18"x18" for a couple of my animals. I fully intend to use AHS heaters.
I have one in with my Desert King, and have had no problems whatsoever.
Setting up for the heat and gradient was easy. It has never failed. I find them more practical than a Ceramic set up too, especially when mulitple vivs are concerned.

Thanks guys, that's a help.

I have used both ceramics and AHS in the past, just wondered if there is anything about Bulls' behaviour that makes one better than the other for them, but they seem fairly straight forward.

Pete- you say a 4x2x2 should be ample- does that mean you think the 4x18"x18" I mentioned will definitely be too small for an adult? I only ask because I already have one of those kicking about, but as you say, I can always put somebody else in there Laughing

Clearly, if he does turn out to be a monster, I'll get him into something bigger.

4x18x18 should be enough for an average male bull, I kept a pair in seperate 4x2x18" vivs and I dont think they would have suffered for the loss of 6".
My pair were 6ft (male) and 7ft (female)

yeah sorry i mistook that you had put 18" I wrongly assumed it was a 4x2x2 the loss of as said 6" is not to much in the viv, in a bloke thats too much to lose LOL!
