ok, it seems my royal managed to magic her way out of her viv. i've searched everywhere for her, i've turned my room upside down twice, rummaged through all of upstairs and i still can't find her. she couldnt have come downstairs as the door is always shut. so at the moment i'm pulling my hair out.

please can you suggest some methods for finding her as i'm pretty worried at this point.

also: how long will she be able to survive outside her viv?

Thanks, Alex.

Firstly, don't panic.

Royals are pretty slow and by now she may have cooled down, and found somewhere warmish to rest. If you are CERTAIN she could not have got out downstairs, that's a start.

Check behing all electronics, in clothes etc. and maybe set some screwed up paper around the edges of the room, that will rustle should she move past them - she will most likely keep to the edges.

I've heard of corns going missing for over a year and being found intact - and royals are fatter, so she should be easier to find.

Maybe leave a mouse overnight next to some of the paper, so if she approaches, you may here her.

Also have a scout round at about 11 'o' clock tonight, when she may be active.

Good luck

When I kept snakes I used a simular tactic to what memme just described.

instead I used screwed up carrier bags placed around the room, turn the lights off and sat with a torch.. unless the snake got out the room its worked nearly every time be it on the 1st 2nd or 12th night Laughing

First, make 100% sure there is NO escape from the room you think it's in, check around radiators (often they wedge behind them) also check there is no hole to escape under the floor boards.

If you are 100% sure that it can't of left the room you are best to start a search of the complete room, piece by piece. Overall they prefer to wedge themselves against something. Check draws too, they can often enter these from the back.

one last thing, if you don't find it today, try leaving some paper down around the edges of the room, flat sheets of newspaper, sprinkle enough baking flour on theses so you can see if the snake is moving around at night.

good luck

Classic Laughing
Went to a house the other day where a 5' ratsnake had escaped from the viv and had been missing for 2 days, found it in under 45 mins, 6inches away from the viv. It had got into a blank space next to a cupboard and had to pull the blank off the wall to get it but they usually dont go far. Keep looking for poo. If it ate on tuesday you may get some pretty soon. Keep sniffing Smile
It wont have wanted to travel across open spaces and usually follow walls, think like the snake and you may get lucky.
Also find out how it escaped before you put it back in, I know this sounds obvious but you said it magically disappeared.
One more thing I'd like to suggest is put a mouse in every room (doors closed) near a shoebox with a small heat pad under it, snake eats and then looks for somewhere warm and dark, this method has worked with corns in the past. Even if it doesn't hang around you can be sure it's still alive and well.
Best of luck
A
