Hey guys,
Seriously contemplating getting a few more cresties and havin' a go at breeding a selected few. I have three right now. All females. One for sure is not breeding quality, one could be.
This is my youngest one; she was about eight weeks old when I got her back in December. She is roughly four months old right now and has some good size, I think. She seems to be showing more and more red, without having to be all fired up to really show it. She doesn't have a nice, clean pinstripe like I hoped for....but what do you guys think?
Is she good enough for a starter breeding female?
Thanks for looking, sorry for three separate posts - had to get all the pics I took of her tonight on for you all. :) Some are not so good, some are pretty decent of her. :) _________________ *Yes, I am the chick in the pic!" ;) |

Oh she's lovely. In my opinion any healthy animal at the appropriate size and weight, is perfect to start a breeding project. As she is only 4 months old she has a bit to go before you can introduce a male to her. Ideally she needs to be at least 35 grams in weight and over 12 months old.
Are you certain she's a female as there is still time for bulges to develop? _________________ Best wishes, Jackie

Jackie,
Thanks for the reply! At the current time, she is a she. ha ha I have kept my fingers crossed that she remains a she, but I also know that my lil she could become a he before I know it. ;)
I have leos, cresties, a royal, corns, a RTB, three dragons and two newly acquired tiger sals. I don't have any desire to breed dragons (I do love them, but not enough time to devote to them for breeding) and a few years ago I did have a couple clutches of leos. I am slowly phasing out of leos, though I will always have a few I think. I have become fascinated by cresties and would like to try to breed at least one female. Of course, right now if this one remains a female....I will need a male first. My other two are adults and yes, 150 percent certain they are females. (I added a pic of each of them below.)
Thanks again for the comments. I think I will let this lil one mature through the next few months and if I have a female, maybe a acquire a male late this summer or fall. If all goes well, maybe I will have a go at breeding a single female next year. ;)
Thanks once again! Appreciate your comments!

Wow your other two females are lovely too. You'll have good breeding group when you do breed them. _________________ Best wishes, Jackie

WOW what type/morph is the last pic? It's amazing I could do with one of those when I come to breeding. |

Jackie - thanks! Maybe I should seriously consider getting a male .... what morph would you recommend would cross nice with these three? (Provided the young one stays female...)
Phil - To be honest, I am just learning the ropes when it comes to morphs. The first female I know is a red dalmatian. The second is just a plain flame. The last one, the one you asked about, is a orange tiger.
Please correct me (Jackie, Scott, etc) if I am wrong. If I plan to breed in the future, I sure want to get my morphs down pat now. :)

hi Shanna,
Some lovely cresteds you have there!
As Jackie say's they are all suitable for breeding, even dull brown cresteds will sometimes produce a nice coloured one, especially if mated to a great looking male.
Did you want to try and breed for a certain morph or are you just happy hatching healthy cresteds?
As for the morph types, yep looks like you have then spot on _________________
