I have been gutloading all my insects with damp fish food for at least six months with great results. With both crickets and mealworms the results are the same, as soon as the fish food is put into the tub they are on it straight away. By dampening the fish food with a water sprayer the insects are getting water and vitamins both from one item of food. If you only gutload with veg etc now, I would suggest trying fish food for gutloading as it is a excellant source of vitamins etc. Has anybody else gutloaded there insects with fishfood before?

i use greens and also a sprinkling of fish food . .

i dont wet the fish food as i find it holds the moisture too much and the bugs dont like that .and everything starts to rot .

i also use fish food on its own if i cant get to the shops for greens

I use fish food high in beta carotenoids for certain livefoods e.g. those that will be given to young amphibians to help colour development such as FBTS that require a high level of beta cartone from the tadpole stage onwards if correct colour is to develop. Tetra Pro is good for this. I rely upon fresh salad given daily to all my feeder insects to provide moisture and a wider range of vitamins and minerals. Plus other food items also on a daily basis.

A few Years ago a Zoo in the middle East tested and did a paper on most of the vitamin supplements and gut loaders.
Medivet Cricket Diet was the most successful product on the market.
If anyone is interested, I will scan the paper and publish it on here.

That would be good Peter thanks. At the moment I use T rex calcium plus for crickets and Nutrabol, Repton and calypso I just vary which products I use to get a broad spread.

Please do Peter, I'd be interested. I always collect such papers. The more info the better. I already have a few papers on the nutrient composition of feeder insects.

For information, the mealworm diet has been superceeded by the new Cricket Diet. The reason it didn't perform as well was simply the ration of calcium in the diet.
We recommend now that the cricket diet is also used for Mealworm and Morio worm.

I have been using Carob powder in my gutloads lately to increase the calcium content, its a natural ingrediant made from tree pods and contains 36% calcium and only 8% phosphorous and when i tested it on its own with different feeders it was consumed by them all, probably because it tastes like chocolate.

I use Medivet, and feed it 'wet', the crickets are all over it, however, I also use Broccoli and other veg, because I usually have some offcuts on a daily basis, seems a waste just to bin it.
