Hey guys! Got the new King yesterday, he's roughly 4 yrs old and about 4ft and he's got a good temperament as far as we've seen. When we got him home and compared him to the other King he's alot slimmer, i don't know if he's underweight or not, i don't know what an underweight snake looks like. The guy in the petshop said that he only gets 1 med mouse a fortnight, is that enough for a king his age and size? We tried feeding him last night but he wasn't interested at all. Haven't managed to get pics yet, don't want to disturb him till he's settled into his new home.

Thanks

Ment to mention that he has a scar on his side, his previous owners tried feeding him live prey! Would that have anything to do with him hardly eating?

I assume it's a Cali. King as they are the most popular. The prey size sounds about right but the frequency should be every 7 days or so. Personally I feed my adult Kings every 7 to 10 days.

Thats what the guy in the pet shop has been feeding him, as a said we tried 2 feed him last night and he wasn't interested at all. We tried dangling it and even heating it up a little just to see if the heat would encourage him to eat but he wouldn't. My other king is on 2 med mice a week (he's abit greedy) I'm kind of worried about him he seems pretty thin.

Hi, seeing that you have only had the animal just over 24hours I really wouldn`t worry. Allow him to settle in for a good few days and try him then with a warmed mouse. Offer him the mouse next week for example, and if he doesn`t strike, don`t freak him out by waving it at him, but just leave it in overnight.

If it`s not gone the next morning, try him a few days to a week later, If the temperatures are right he will take it when he is ready. Snakes are all individuals and some take a while longer to settle than others. Leaving him in peace is your best tactic right now whilst he is acclimating to his new surroundings.

One of mine took over a month to feed when he first arrived, and others fed on the first night here. Wink

Feeding every 7 - 10 days is sound advice. Wink

Ok koke will give it a try next week when I feed the others. Is there signs that I can tell if he's underweight or not? Could the live prey incident have put him off food? I'm such a softie when it comes to my animals and I worry alot probably too much!!! Just hope I can get him out of the habit of eating every fortnight!

Thanks

Do you have a picture of him? If not, as long as he isn`t triangular with a defined spinal ridge (bit like a toblerone bar) then I shouldn`t worry. Some Kings brumate (stop feeding and become less active to a degree) this time of year even if the temperatures aren`t changed also.

I`ll be very suprised if he dosen`t feed for you once he has grown accustomed to his new surroundings and feels secure however.

Don't have any pics yet, didn't want to disturb him. I don't think he's like a toblerone although he is kind of the smae colour! He's been lying in the cooler part of the viv, I've only seen him on the warmer side once or twice. I'll give him time and try to stop worrying so much Very Happy

Finally got some pics of the new king.... everybody meet Kenpachi!

This 1 shows roughly how big he is, the viv is 36".

Kenpachi climbing up Steven's arm.

The next two pics show the thickness of his body, does he look underweight?

He still isnt interested in food, tried feednig him tonight but he just recoiled away from the mouse. I've left the mouse in the viv so hopefully he'll eat it sometime during the night. Sorry about the quality of the pics, I've got a crappy camera but it serves it's purpose I suppose.

Enjoy!
