It would appear that the problem of smuggling illegal species is currently at it`s worst.

Sawthis on dendroworld-hideous. What are the protocols regarding legal export of animals? Its a shame that something cant be introduced to prompt the "smugglers" into treating the frogs well-like some sort of frog subsidy or something. That way the local people would benefit from the protection and conservation of the frogs. Some sort of captive farming project should be implemented, where the frogs natural environment is conserevd and perhaps a quota of frogs are removed from the population every year-depending on the success of that population.
Just a pipe dream I suppose _________________ Interested in amphibians? Join us at Myamphibia for friendly banter, amazing pictures and great information. Make some amphibious friends today! |

Na its just published on the web and not buried in a CITES data base is all.. Smuggling animals be it frogs or congo pygmies its as old as the pet trade and the laws governing it.
Its a sad and unneeded trade as there are plenty of frogs available legally and I am yet to meet a hobbyist with all the frogs available and in thie collection.
As for animals being legal ect it depends who you talk to and where they are. For instance I called DEFRA and CITES and got informed by both parties a certain frog was legal and even recieved reexport permits for that species of frog.
I get frustrated with new illegal imports of certain frogs becuase the frogs in question are easily bred in captivity that there really is no need to go over to peru or costa rica and have them stuff into soda bottle or film canisters, to bring them back.
Sam there are farming projects for these frogs... it just takes time for the farms and the authorities to release the frogs.
Mark Pepper of understory enterpises is one of those people who are doing a hell of alot for Peruvian frogs.. _________________ Paul

It would be nice mate.. as would world peace
Thing is as long as there is poverty in the world and "rich visitors" wanting the frogs, lizards or what ever that is as common or boring to them as a house spider is to us and are willing to pay what seems a fortune to them for these silly what evers and add to that the couriosity of people wanting a piece of the rain forest and the one up manship of most people ( Human nature ) smuggling will always be around.
The thing is legal collections are done in more or less the same manner.. a guy goes to a exotic country that has what they want.. they go to a village pay to us a minimal price but to the village a large price and say get me these i will be back next week. _________________ Paul

In a perfect World certainly Sam.
How many W/C royal pythons are still brought over however, and Royals as a species are hardly hard to come by in captivity. There will more than likely unfortunately always be an illegal trade of some proportion. We should try our utmost to live up to this site`s very title, Captivebred, and breed what frogs we do have in captivity.
It will no doubt reduce the numbers of illegally imported frogs if they are freely available as CB animals. I very much doubt it will stop it altogether though. I hope to God it does, but I just don`t see it happening to be honest. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD
