i may be getting a pair of checkered garters in the next few months, a normal male and an albino female.
If i bred them will i get any albino babies or will i have to mate the female with one of the babies?
also what size viv will they need as adults?
How many babies do they have?
What do the babies eat? same as adults (pinkies)? _________________ Tom

The babies will all be het for albino so yes you will need to breed one of the babies back to the female or find another het albino male. _________________

I was under the impression that if one parent was visual albino, then you have a chance of some visual neos, along with some normals and some hets!?!?
Vivarium size is specific to how many garters you want to house together. A 4ft x 2ft x 1.5ft would do 1 male and 3 females. For just the 2, I would use a 3ft x 2ft x 1.5ft .
They have litters of around 12 neonates.
If you can't get the neos straight on to rodent pray, then try small earthworm, slugs, guppies, tadpoles and on occasion I've even had them take crickets. As for adults, they shouldn't be on pinkies at that size. Try to at least get them on to a medium mouse every 8-9 days or so.
Best of luck with them mate, garters are great wee snakes. _________________

normal to albino (which is a recessive gene) will result in 100% het for albino, only Co-Dom genes will produce visuals in the first breeding. _________________

Cheers for that Scott. Must go and read up on genetics some more. _________________

sorry i do not do colour morphs really. Het stands for heterozygous doesn't it? which is when they carry 2 sets of different genes?
is there no way you can get any albino babies? _________________ Tom

If you breed 2 het's together the odds are you should get some visual albinos.
If you breed 2 albinos together then you should get albinos.
If you breed a normal with an albino you wont get any visual albinos - they will all look normal and be het for albino.
Thats very simplified, but I hope it helps. |

As stuart and scott have both said you will have hets for albino, however here is an easy way of working it out in the future if you didnt know the method already. You can substitute any genes into the square to work out any potential offspring of any morph.
Although i dont know myself how it works for multiple het morphs _________________ 0.0.1 Biak Green tree python
