Hey guys, after some research online and reading books, I've finally bought an 8 month old Sulcata hatchling. I'm very excited and a bit nervous at the same time. Right now he's in a 10 gallon reptile setting but I'm already working on a more natural setting for him with space to explore, burrow, etc.
Tips appreciated!
P.S. Yes, I named him/her Rootbeer. It's a little shy right now adjusting to his new home but he was really active and playful at the shop. I'll have a picture soon! |

| hi sorry to sound negative but i dont think your housing is anyway near big enough for a sulcata hatchling and as you probably know they grow real fast ,but yes they are real characters ,they require a lot of calcium i.e nutribol mine also have cuttlefish after its been soaked thelove it biting chunks of it of as you may know this also is a source of calcium,there appietite never slows constantly ready for food certain grasses and veg some fruit but not to much as the sugar content is very high im sorry im rattling on ill leave you to enjoy your sulcata,take care. |

Lovely tortoise but as said totally unsuitable housing.
Tortoises dont understand glass! They will keep trying to get through.
Tanks have totally unsuitable ventilation and are like slow cooking ovens to tortoises.
Also are you aware your tortoise will get so big you cannot pick it up, it will walk through a fence no problem and dig the biggest tunnel. This is why many of them come up for rehoming.

Sorry for the lack of update. Rootbeer wasn't in the tank for very long, it was just temporary. And yes, he had UVB and I also took him out daily for natural sunlight. I built him a new table, well, not a table this time but a tub instead. Here are some pictures. Its not finished yet but I put him in there to test it out. I used peat and sand as substrate. (He's two years old now btw)
