I have group of spenceri and within that group there are males and females although at this time not sure on the sex of some but have a reasonable idea. I keep them simple and clean, They are kept on wood shavings and are doing fine as my prevoius monitors have done on this substrate, I see no need to change it as the parents are kept exactly the same way with no problems, I have gone down that road of trying different substrates for example sand/dirt etc. I would rather have a nest box in the viv rather than turning the whole viv into one big nest box, you often end up with an house full of dust much easier to contain in a certain area like a nest box within the viv. I don't care what anyone else thinks I do it my way. |

Good luck with the group and I for one hope that you are successful breeding wise. Is the whole group approaching maturity?

A general guideline which I would say is very applicable with regards to the majority of herps.

Sean, if it works for you, then stick to it. As they say if it ain`t broke then don`t fix it. Again, substrate choices is a subject which people thrash backwards and forwards constantly with all herps.

Well it certainly makes sense to have a nest box to make the task of searching for eggs a more realistic one.

Like I said before, if a system or method is working for someone, then they are probably best off sticking with it.
Thanks for the info Sean. I hope you don`t mind me asking a few questions. There is not enough info freely available on monitors in general in my opinion and it`s always very interesting to hear first hand from an actual keeper`s experiences compared to reading the generalisations in so many publications. It also makes the forum far more interesting and informative. What size area are your group in? What proportion of their diet is rodent also? As you can probably tell I have more than just a passing interest in monitors but have never kept anything other than the commonly available species. Certainly nothing so stunning as a Spencers. Perhaps one day. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

Hi Peter,
They are all housed separate, this way it is easy to feed them and no results with injury. They are very food orientated and would not hesitate to try and bite one another if they smelt food on each other.
They are housed in 8x3x3 for the older animals and babies in 5x2x2.
They are fed predominately rodents.
I hope this answers your questions.
Kind regards
Sean |
