My Xennie tank has never give me a days grief, the filter does its job etc. However, yesterday morning all was well- in the afternoon the whole tank looked as if it had had a whole tub of calcium powder dumped in it. Obviously it hasnt, the white powdery substance covered everything and left a tide mark around the sides of the tank. Nothing new has been introduced into the tank, like rocks, decor, plants or frogs etc. Nothing could have fallen in as tank lidded, I use no sprays or plug in room fresheners. The substance is white powdery stuff, not slimy or gritty and has no odour. I put some under a microscope and saw no signs of life so assume its not some type of algae. The frogs were netted , rinsed and put into a clean emergency set up. Does anyone know what it could be, the frogs appear to be fine so hopefully I whipped them out before any damage done. The temps a steady 78 Deg and the lighting is a small Interpet Beauty light as used for fish.

Most odd.
What filtration are you using? It`s an aquatic set up obviously. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

Hi Pete the filter is a Fluval 2 with activated charcoal. I always clean the filter, change the pads, re new the charcoal etc and the 1/3 water change is always done using aged water from a lidded container. Its a real mystery but the good thing is as yet the frogs are showing no ill effects. All very odd.

Have you recently cleaned the filter?
Filters contain good live bacteria that feed on the waste that the filter collects. If you clean the fiter media under a tap or replace all of the media you kill the good bacteria. When you clean the sponges clean one sponge then the other a month or so later (You can cut sponges into two) this gives the bacteria time to spread between filter media. If you've only got one sponge clean it in water taken from the tank (this water contains no chlorine or chloramine and will contain some good bacteria.) The more bacteria you have the cleaner your tank.
I know nothing about frogs but i'm an expert with fish. _________________
