I have finaly decided the my first Herp will be a Ball Python and I have a few questions.
1: Would I be better to house a Sub Adult a 64 litre box like this one http://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/onlineshop/b64_0litre.htm
or a 20gal 2ft Aquarium, I will then house him in a 4X2X2 wooden Viv at around a year old
2: Is it best to start with a Male or Female
3: Recommended Breeders I'm happy to travel for the right one
Thanks for looking |

hi
I use the 50 ltr really useful boxes. Same floor space as the 64 litre but not as high. Either will do for snakes upto and a little beyond 2kgs in weight.
A 4x2x2 is big enougth for a boa and way too big for a royal.
I have built a rack useing Ikea Komplement boxes. These have a floor space of approx 32inches by 18 inches. the height is about 9-10 inches.
these are perfect for large females and nesting females.
hope helps.

I've got my 3 foot Royal in a 4x2x2 foot viv with 3 hides and she is perfectly happy, eats fine, sheds well and is out and about climbing around every night, whats the problem with that size? and my boas viv is 6x3x3, i think a 4x2x2 would be too small for her when she is full grown. _________________ I want a JCP, a BRB, a Burm and a group of leo's. I've got a Royal, a Common Boa, a Corn, a BD, a Chile Rose and a Budgie |

Nothing Lots of people keep them great in Great big vivs.
I just dont seem to get it when it is so unnecessary
Just saying what I think. And the way I keep them. I use home made racks as opposed to display vivs so coming from different angle.
To heat 6 X 50 ltr usefull boxes is 3 heatmats 1 between 2 boxes. About 120 watts for 3 layers. Space is approx 40 inches wide by 24-28 deep by 30 inches high.
Humidity is not an issue, easily kept optimal.
Boxes are really easy to keep clean and ultra lightweight. Put snake in another box and wash box, dry put back for next clean out. Will cater upto and a little beyond 2kg snakes.
4 x Komplement boxes going one to a shelf sides ways,
Can keep 4 big female royals in a space approx 40 inches by 24 inches by 40 inches in melamine wood rack.
3 foot by 18inch floor space is often put forward as optimal for adults, One of the great things about royals is you can keep a few, or a lot in a small area in a rack, and get more pleasure from them because they are easier to maintain.
YES they can be kept optimal in big vivs, even 4 x 2 x 2 vivs. Great go and do it. Royals are great animals but addictive, be warned, you might not stop at one.
Let us know how you get on.

Hiya
Spose it all comes down to what you want.
If its a display thing in your living room, then a rack of boxes isnt what you want really.
I went the display way but will hopefully later breed and will go the rack way then ( in a purpose built room not mu living room )
My royals are in a display viv that is 5x4x2, nothing wrong with the way there are, all happy and feeding.
Strokes for folks hey.....
