Anyone breeding cockroaches?
I have a colony of 'red runners' not sure of the latin name but they are small, about 3.5 cm as adults and a bright red colour. I've had them about 3 months now and the colony has absolutely exploded in number and has needed splitting 3 times now, I'll post up some photos tomorrow. If anyone is looking for a good feeder roach, these seem to fit the bill. They can't climb smooth sides either! |

I bought a colony off the livefood site of 'soft-bodied' feeder roaches, not sure on the latin as well. Didn't really like using them as much, just thought they were more awkward to use then crickets/locusts but they are good to add some variation to any diet |

Large plastic tub (2ft high by 20" x 15") stacked with egg carton on it's side. This then sits on 3" of damp peat. Food is Vitalin dog food and then water is sprayed onto the egg carton everyday. |

That is just one piece of egg carton, every piece in the container has this many or more on so there must be 10's of 1000's in each bin.
The only downside to the red runners is the size difference, I need to figure out a way of grading them so I can crop the same size each time.
I've not actually used any as food yet either, so it will be interesting to see which lizards like them (if any ) |

Ive no experience with these myself but im thinking if you was to make a box out of 1 cm gap wire mesh and put a stack of them into it all the small ones would go through the mesh to get to the refuge of the egg carton leaving the adult feeders trapped in the mesh box.
Just a thought. |

Hi, Dave @ Insects Unlimited. Wood roaches deposit their ootheca`s (egg- cases) which are about 8mm long & 3mm in diameter and are chestnut brown in colour. If you use a substrate of bran, they show up easily & if you`re careful these can be collected & decanted before they hatch out. I found a cat-litter-tray scoop was good for this.Hope this helps... _________________ Dave Messer @ Insectsunlimited.
