Hi all,
just interested if anyone keeps or has kept Brown Tree Snakes, Boiga irregularis.?

I had one a while ago and was really amazed by it, fantastic animal, really relaxed and very pretty. I know there are now nearly 2 million of them on Guam and the catastrophe we have created, but they are a really nice snake IMHO.

It depends who you ask - a certain "article writing expert" said she found them different to other boiga species. That said, this silly woman also claimed they are on the DWA so as far as experts go she is pretty useless. Laughing

I can understand the confusion about B. irregularis on DWA, I recently saw a review of the DWA by DEFRA that DID place them on the list. This review is titled the "Effectiveness Study of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976" This is NOT the definitive end result but simple an assessment as far as I can determine, although it is very easy to see how someone could be mistaken.

Here's the link

Makes good reading if you can be bothered

I would however be interested in getting at least a pair but a couple of hatchlings would be perfect, Glidergirl, do you have a breeding group?
Thanks
Al

Just in case you can't be bothered the important quote from the study for me is;

"Deletion of mangrove snake (Boiga dendrophila). We have had numerous submissions and
assistance from experts in snake poisoning that this snake, although large and sometimes
aggressive, is insufficiently venomous to cause harm to man. This is a species from which
there have been many recorded bites, but no record of other than mild envenomation. It is
probably widely kept unlicensed. Addition of Boiga irregularis and Phylodryas olferrii is
recommended due to records of severe envenomation and death"

By the way, it should read as Phylodryas olfersii , can't trust these civil servants to get it right Very Happy

Not so sure that B. irregularis should be included in the same breath as P. olfersii, only heard of nasty envenomation in children.

regards
Al

Unfortunately not - we have a single one, can't remember if it's m/f though! We have too many snakes to remember them all!!

It hasn't been sexed yet Marie.

It's a nice little thing, not too aggressive, though care does have to be taken. Nice colouration on it. I keep getting tempted to buy it.

Wicked snakes... i love the goldy-yellowy-brown on them and their big eyes.
Shame they are such a pest in the wild.
I guess a reason that they(the 'powers' that be) have more records of more serious envenomations from them is because they are so numerous in the wild that a child, elderly or ill/allergic person is far more likely to bump into one and therefore the number of bites, and thus serious bites is going to rise... unfortunately they dont seem to take this into consideration(or are just not intelligent enough to do so).
(^not fact... just an idea Smile ^)
