|
|
A few years ago I kept some fire bellied toads, before getting heavily into lizards. Ive now got abit of space and was thinking of getting some kind of frog / frogs.
I was thinking of getting one or two smaller exo terra terrariums (maybe the 30x30x45 or 30x30x30 size). Anyone got any good suggestions for something abit different that I could keep?
Thanks for any suggestions. |

Using flightless fruit flies is no more trouble, actually far less trouble, than using crickets. I breed both. Spring tails are also on the menu, as well as bean weevils as a supplement to the diet for the larger species which are possibly the easiest things to culture that I know of. Hatchling crickets can be used also but can be a problem if they evade capture for long enough to grow too big to be eaten. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

So are fruit flies easy to breed? Dont they get everywhere when you are trying to feed them to your frogs? I just have this vision of opening the tub and having hundreds of little flies crawling out! |

They are very easy to breed and you can make your own culture mix. To avoid loads crawling out just tap the top of the culture knocking them all to the bottom them just shake a few out into the viv. Alternatively you can just place the whole culture into the viv with a smallish hole in the top and allow the flies to crawl out at a steady pace. |

Flightless fruit flies cannot fly, and find it less easy , (though they still can) to climb once covered in supplementation powder such as Nutrobal for example.
What I do is, if adding supplements, have a wide mouthed receptacle ready and waiting with a pinch of dusting powder in it. Peel back one corner of the culture that I want to feed from. Tap the culture tub gently against the larger empty receptacle at an angle so that the flies tumble into the larger one, continuously tapping all the while. At the same time I tap the larger container against the wall or whatever is handy to prevent them climbing out. When I have enough flies I reseal the culture swiftly, all the time still tapping lightly the larger tub.
The culture finshed with for the time being , I put it to one side, and give the tub with the dust and flies in a good "swirl" to dust the flies properly. Then I tip the flies into a funnel directed precisely where I want them, tapping as neccessary to prevent them climbing out. A few goes at it and you will perfect it. Very simple to do, and something that I do every day _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD
