|

Hi guys,
Next year I will have a dangerous combination of more free time and more space in the house, and I'd really like to breed something. Problem is, which herp? I currently only have a leopard gecko, though I have a little experience with garter snakes (a few years ago).
I'm thinking of getting another herp (can be either lizard or snake as the snake-phobic will have moved out) but I'd like it to be one I could breed.
So, can anyone suggest herps I could breed, that would make enough money from the offspring to cover costs, and that I wouldn't have too much trouble selling the youngsters. I don't mind putting in a little effort, it's just for example someone told me normal leos are nearly impossible to sell, even very cheaply, because there are so many around.
I like the look of blue tongued skinks, and mexican black king snakes, but am open to any suggestions.

as above really, choose something you really like.
If you're successful at breeding them it will help to cover costs. You can earn a little bit of money on breeding almost anything but I would steer clear of animals that require lots of food as babies like bearded dragons and yemen chameleon (these eat so much food that by the time you have sold the babies they have probably cost you more to feed than the money you get for selling them).
I'd stick to leopard geckos if you already have one. Most shops would be happy to trade babies for live foods (they would give you credit against buying any foods from them), this could work out that you adults cost nothing to feed for some of the year.
Remember, the fun is in the breeding, not counting the money from them (although that's nice too ) _________________

Yes the feeling and buz you get from a succesfull breeding project is awesome.
Just pick something that you really like and that appeals to you as the other posters have said. You have to like the hrrp else whats the point. Good luck! _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Whilst I totally agree with lol93, Scott and Rick, I just thought I'd comment on the two species that you mentioned.
Of the two, Mexican black kingsnakes would prob. be the best choice because blue-tongues are not so easy...Having said that, sometimes it the challenge that appeals...
Cheers,
Mark. |
