Hi,

I have just taken my Brazilian Rainbow boa to the vet & my vet thinks that he has a form of Myositis.
Has anyone ever encountered this, or does anyone know any specialists that I could speak to? My vet has never seen this before in any snake & we need to collate as much info as possible before he can begin treatment.

Myositis is a disease, that attacks the body's immune system, which normally fights infections and viruses, does not stop fighting once the infection or virus is gone. The immune system then attacks the body's own normal, healthy tissue through inflammation or swelling. This disease causes muscle weakness.

In my snakes case it is only his lower jaw mainly the left side that has deteriorated.

Please please can anyone help.

Thanks in advance

Melissa

The first thing i thought was stomatitis, i know this is clutching at straws but is there any way you could have miss-heard your vet? Perhaps even an error on his part when reading up about it?

I haven't been on livefoods so apologies if this has been covered or resolved already.

Hi everyone,

I'm really hoping that it isn't Myositis, but since he was diagnosed on Mon I have been reading up as much about the disease as I can in Humans & dogs & the symptoms are painfully similar. So I need to concentrate on finding a treatment for this.

My vet is very experienced & came highly recommended. In fact I drove from London to Cambridge just so that my snake Mandrake could get the best possible treatment.

The problem is that my vet & several other specialists I have spoken to have never encountered Myosistis in a snake before, so we're all trying desperately to collate any info we can from other herpetologist, specialist or breeders anywhere in the world that may have encountered something similar.

It may seem excessive but I love my snake dearly & by sourcing all this info perhaps we can also help others in a similar situation.

I really do appreciate all your help & will follow any leads suggested .

Thank you!!!

Have you tried to get hold of the liverpool school of tropical medicine? If you try sending a PM to "PDR" on the livefood forum he may be able to help you? (long shot but you never know)
