Hello.
My son has a horsfields who is about 2 years old. This is the first winter that the tort has been with us and so I am a bit green when it comes to the whole hibernation thing. My only memories of hibernating tortoises was from Blue Peter and that looked like a doddle. Put it in a box of hay and away you go! Surely there is more to it than that. Is there a special way of preparing the tort e.g. reducing the amount of light and temperature or the amount or type of food supplied. I assume that there are triggers that will induce hibernation and I am sure that someone out there will know and be able to tell me.
Cheers

Can't comment on horsefields in regards to when & how long they should be hibernated but I can tell that any tortoise that is preparing for hibernation should not be fed for 10 - 14 days prior, they can and should be offered plenty of water though.
I'm sure some other more experianced keepers can fill in some more details for you, good luck. _________________
