i have a young corn snake, which i have had for about a month. It is living in a medium sized contico box and being kept on aspen. My question is:
When i move him into a larger viv in a year or two, i want to use aspen as the substrate, but because with vivs the heater pad goes inside the enclosure, unlike the contico, won't he burn himself on the pad? _________________ Tom

Maybe you could switch to a ceramic with a guard around it then on a pulse stat? _________________

if you have a heat mat on a stat inside the viv and it's all set up correctly (ie probe in the right place) then you won't have a problem. Just make sure you have enough substrate to soak up any mess.
I have used heat pads inside many vivs with out any problems with the animals inside. I'd advise against it though for any of the larger species (boids etc) that can produce lots of fluids when then mess. _________________

Depends what you are trying to control and for what species. I have a probe set up on my desert lizard vivs, this is placed near the middle and is set at what I want the maximum ambient temp to be. This gives very high basking temps without over heating the vivs (good for things like beardeds, Rankins and monitors).
For snakes I set the probe actually on the heat mat, and then have a thermometer inside on the basking heat source, I then dial the thermostat to the temp I need based on the thermometer NOT the thermostat reading. _________________
