growth is food related, feed plenty and he'll grow quick, when he slows down in growth he will start to get fat real quick (which you must avoid).

I would say perhaps 15" - 20" for the first year would be ok

as an idea my male (yes i have seen his tackle) was about 15 inches at 18 months. He is now 27 inches and still growing although VERY slowly. He is nowhere near the size i expected him to be by now, i was all geared up for a monster! Confused
