Thought I'd post a couple of images of Smooth Snakes. Hope you enjoy them.
just for the record...................
I am fully English Nature licensed for surveying and disturbing all fully protected species i.e Great Crested Newt, Sand Lizard, Natterjack Toad and Smooth Snake.
Photographing fully protected species can be classed as disturbance and Caution should be excercised!

nice hope to one day get some pictures of these little fellas myself any tips in regard to getting to do it with english anture approval and finding them

Just how common / rare would you say they are? (in other words in areas they exist are they easy to find?)

That's a difficult question and its easiest to give the standard answer ..very scarce and limited to a number of sites mainly south of the M25.
They can be found in good locations but these are all SSSI sites and access is difficult.
The problem is that if your perceived as disturbing them then you need a full survey license. Unlike birds you cannot get a photographic license.
If you happened to come across one and move something out of the way to look at the snake or to photograph it then your probably breaking the law.
I'm lucky and have a full license and work on conservation projects so its straight forward for me.
