Hi dan

When recently out in india we caught D. tristis, well we tried to it jumped from tree to tree like Chryslopela does and the Irula who was with us caught it instead. It was very uninclined to bite. I had always though this was a rear fanged species so i had a look for the fangs but it didnt seem to have any, just had uniform aglyphous dentition.

Yeah, as i mentioned it's the Dendrelaphis striatus i am most interested in. They look very nice it's just the rear fang thing that has me unsure. I've not found much mention of the dentition varying between the species, it all seems to be listed as rear fanged although this may well just be down to guesswork by the authors (ie the "if you've seen one bronzeback you've seen em all" mentality)

Still not been to look at your thread yet Embarassed Will go have a look now Cool

We keep 3 d.punctulata (2 bronzebacks and 1 green) and, unlike my b.irregularus, I have seen no sight of rear fangs in them. All the documentation I have on them states catagorically that they are non-venomous, so that would seem to me to preclude the need for fangs. hope this is some help.

one of the bronzebacks:

Thanks for that raptor (sorry, don't know your name), out of interest do you know if they all have that sort of girth? Yours looks much bigger than i had imagined, which is a good thing.
Regards to the fangs, or lack of, the text i have read is quite old so it may just be outdated. Being completely harmless is better for me.

Yours is a lovely animal, very nice

Thanks for the compliment Dan (BTW, my name's Chilli). That one's our female, the male is nicer in my opinion, but she is a beautiful natured animal, unlike him, who's still a bit snappy. To be fair though, he's only a couple of months out of the wild (see my post "our tree snakes")

As far as I'm aware, the males are a bit smaller than the females, but she's average sized for her species, at least in our part of the world.

They are coming out of cooling now, and we're trying for a mating within the next week.

I don't think they are rear fanged Dan.. I didn't see any while worming, but when its settled I'll have a better look.

its a 'painted bronzeback'.. well supposed to be, but looking at the pics I think its an elegant bronzeback.

Dendrelaphis Pictus or prob actually formosus instead of pictus

Stunning little thing, the skin between the scales is right blue in the forward part, so when he neck puffs up the blue stands out.

Massive eyes, and it watches everything, just gotta see if it feeds and what it feeds on, don't really want to use any of my anoles or geckos if I can help it.
