These are still quite young (around 18" overall length) but will attain a total length of around 5'.

mertensi is a very interesting species, i saw them once at a friends house they are almost like aquatic panoptes. |

Yes Patrik that is quite an accurate description they remind me too of aquatic panoptes. Now they are very common in Europe the most readily available of the larger Australian varanids due to the amount of people's breeding success with this species. |

There is a fair bit of footage of this species on a DVD of mine, "Wild Downunder" it`s called. Fantastic swimmers and it is amazing to witness on the DVD how the monitor can "taste" out (rather than sniff out!) a dead fish and locate it from a considerable distance and through water. Great to see.
