A friend of a friend of a Friend wanted to see how Syd was getting along and immediately criticized the fact i had Aspen as a substrate and said i should the wood shavings like you have in rabbit or hamster cages. I thought that this stuff would create too much dust plus the fact that it's not a hamster or rabbit, it's a snake for crying out loud........after a heated conversation with this guy he left promptly....let me know your thoughts.....am i right or wrong? Perhaps he should bring his hamster down when Syd's a little bigger....he-he... |

Personally i dont think you can beat good old newspaper, cheap and easy to clean.
A lot of the US breeders seem to use Aspen though. |

I currently use newspaper. In the past I have used wood shavings.
The advantages of wood shavings is that it absorbs to a degree any liquid waste matter, and gives the snake more of a chance to avoid lying in it.
Newspaper tends to soak and spread. I am thinking about using wood shavings or aspen.
I like the smell of wood shavings.
What do others think.
newspaper
aspen or
wood shavings
pros and cons please
thanks

New paper is excellent as is unprinted newspaper.
Aspen is very popular in the states as is cypress mutch (the later is great at holding humidity). As long as you avoid any pine/cedar products (TOXIC) and avoid sand/dirt (clogs the heat pits) you'll be fine. _________________ All the Best- Deb

None of the above!!
I use flax, it looks similar to aspen or hemp but is softer and dust free. Also has an added bonus that it doesn't move around in lumps quite so readily as aspen, it forms a carpet "of sorts" that can be spot cleaned with ease.
Info on flax
As usual it's a horse bedding/food primarily. _________________ TFA

quote "If you suffer from dizziness run naked, after sunset, three times through a field of Flax. While you do this the Flax will take to itself your dizziness and you'll be cured. "
Sounds great! _________________
