ID of Libyan monitors

Anyone know what this is? Photos were taken in Libya.

The chap in the picture is a guide escorting some engineers/surveyors in the desert. He caught this, and was going to cut its head off, so as to impress them. When they told him that they would not be impressed, and to let it go unharmed, he was rather insulted, but after much argument, he did let it go. It was injured during capture though, as you can see.

Its Varanus griseus, lovely looking animal, lucky too by the sounds of it !!!

Why do people have treat animals in this way just to make them feel like men is beyond me,I hope to god that their only flesh wounds and he/she is roaming the desert in peace.

Yes that is varanus griseus. I keep this species it is CITES appendix 1.
