Let's break it down; I a fan of rats as prey items & here's why:
1. The correct size prey for a Regius is 1-1.5 times the thickest part of the snake (compared with the GIRTH of the prey)- this means a hatching can be started on rat picks without problem
2. Based on the above, your Regius never outgrows it's prey item... you just up the size of the FT rat as your snake grows. Those who feed mice will need to feed multiple prey items in a setting to insure their snakes are properly fed- the snake also has to work harder to feed on mice at this point.
3. Regius are known to imprint on prey, starting them on mice then switching to rats later can be challenging.
4. Snakes that are fed rats seem to thrive... I've had mice eaters that I switched over to rats and the difference was amazing!!
Hope this helps & Best Wishes, whatever you decide -Deb _________________ All the Best- Deb

Small mice to start with, them once they are able to eat fully furred rats I switch them over. So far I haven't found a problem switching between mice & rats. _________________

I am a rat convert. One of my females has become fussy, she prefers mice, but when properly hungry will eat rats. I give her rats which are about 90grms which is the same as about 2 and a half to 3 mice.
1 90grm rat (from honeybrook farm) 50pence. 3 mice £1.50.
Does anyone know how much is absorbed in actual growth.
e.g. if a 1000gram royal eats 90grms a week for 5 weeks = 450grms.
how much of it will be converted into actual snake putting on weight as opposed to waste/fuel.
thanks
