how many watts does a heat tape have?
i can't find any reference to it
also what type of heatmat would be save to use without a stat in an already 75 f warm room
i may be interested in getting some leos to extend me small gecko collection but i have no stat and i'm on a tight budget. i know somwe small heatmatts do no need a stat as they are very low in wattage
i hope this is the right section as i couldn't find anywhere to post equipment questions
thanx _________________ ULI |

By heat tape do you mean heat strips (Like long heatmats) or heat cables which you tape down under the viv?
Cable:
50W 10' 3.05m
75W 20' 6.10m
150W 40' 12.2m
Heat strips vary with size but the highest wattage are probably 60W max.
Personally I dont think any heatmat should be used without a stat, however if the temps in your room are stable you could attach it to a dimmer (cheap enough from DIY shops).
You would then have to fiddle with the dimmer until the heatmat provided the correct temperature for the viv.
I have seen even a 6x5" heatmat melt through a plastic viv when not on a stat, so please regulate it in some way. _________________ -Hannah- |

i like the dimmer idea
i was refering to the heatstrips or heat tape.
i'm not going to put any heat under the vivs but behind. i'm planning on a rack systhem with 6 contico boxes
then i can seperate males and females if i have to
i may still opt for cave geckos but i do like leos
all the morphs i like are the cheap once
makes a change as i usually happen to like all the expensive options _________________ ULI |

I use heat cables in some racking, these are connected via a dimming switch, it's quite an old rack so if I was to rewire I would put it through a pulse thermostat now.
As for how many watts, it all depends on the length you require, the longer the higher wattage used. _________________

thanx scott
i actually moved my cresties into the spare room as it was getting to warm for them in the fish house
i'm going to sell the fish and shut it down to save some money.
gonna have one tank in the frontroom once i talked her indoors round.
i be able to keep quite a few vivs in the spare room and heating is not needed until the winter.
i've given up on other geckos but chinese leos of whom id like a pair
when it gets cold again i will be all set with stats and heat tape.
be a nice project.
i quite look forward to building the racking for the vivs.
actually it be more like a wall unit then a rack. _________________ ULI |
