|

Well I finally got back from the Houten show late last night, left Saturday afternoon with two St Georges flags strapped to the van, managed to get about 600 miles worth with them before they ripped and blew off
Anyway...the show..firstly well organised, spacious, plenty of tables (quite a few spare). Good parking both for visitors and table holders, certainly the best venue out of all the European shows.
Overall the show was pretty quiet, may of had a little to do with the heat but probably more to do with the fact Holland was playing in the world cup. A fairly good range of animals, mainly CB but still a lot of WC.
Our trip started out bad, couldn't even get out of England without being stopped by customs...after an hours delay while they checked out what the law is with reptiles (as they clearly had NO CLUE!), we were back on our journey....we then had Euro Tunnel place us in the wrong lane so we missed the next train......the advantage to that was we could listen to England playing football (no radio or tv in the train!). We finally got to our hotel about 9pm.
Coming back....well that was just as annoying...got to the terminal only to be told we had a 4 hour wait for the next available train....that didn't go down too well with me, so with my excellent French language skills (can't use on a family forum), they agreed to put us on the next train
But NO, customs decided we looked far more suspicous than the Datsun next to us with 7 Taliban cramed in and two rocket launchers hanging out the boot and even the 'off license Van' in front jammed full of cheap fags and booze, obviously our cards are marked . Again, customs had NO IDEA on what we could and couldn't bring into the UK, lucky enough they only managed to waste 15 minutes of our time before they let us go...along with all our mammals and reptiles . So we still managed to make the train.
All in all, a very hard 2 days, very hot, hungry and tired but still worth the effort. _________________

Glad you enjoyed it even though customs were a pain in the rear! Although I do agree you look dodgier than a datsun full of taliban..pmsl.
Does sound like it was quieter but think I would have preferred that to all the pushing and shoving especially in that heat! What was the temperature like inside the venue? _________________

Scott
Got to agree that it was a great show(apart from my son going missing)
Good to meet you at last.
As this was my first as a trader,it opened my eyes up how hard you have to work.
Didn't do to bad considering we left at 2pm,met lots of people that i only knew via email(funny what we think people are gonna look like and then in the flesh your illusions are shattered, still,i wonder how many people put me down as a slap head)
There were some great animals if you looked well, the English guys definitely pulled rank.
Ray Hines had the best selection of geckos by far,Peter Rices boas were just awesome and Darren Biggs had some mind blowing ball morphs plus some other delicacies on his stand.
Same thoughts as you
Tired, hot, skint and hungry,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, WHENS THE NEXT ONE
I would like to thank all you guys who helped me with my search for my son.
Scott,James,John,Terry,Peter,Yap,Colin and the staff at the expo center i apologies if i have left any out, thanks guys i would have been stuffed without your help. |

Temp was ok, not much different to hamm in Sept (although Hamm takes a few hours to heat up, this was hot the moment you woke up!).
Rick, I didn't really buy much for myself at all, hardly ever do .
I bought 30 female Multimammate mice to set up a colony. There were a few bits I wanted but forgot to buy
Yep, customs was certainly interesting Stu. They do some stupid things and we wonder why our country is full of drugs and guns! (I won't post up what we were told by one customs official but it did seem to leave a big gap in our border controls!)
With regards to the reptiles, I did ask the question "why are there no customs officers at the dartford tunnel?" after all traveling across the EU is no different to travelling thru the UK! (just a shame they don't know that!). _________________

WELL, lol
We missed each other again Scott!! Just before you rang i finished off my phone credit so all i got was a message to say you had rang Next time i'm not going to guess i have enough credit
I didn't mind the temperature too much, although we suffered some losses as a result on the way home that i am NOT happy about, infact it is safe to say i am GUTTED about it. Nothing i can do now though.
No customs fun for me this time, which is kinda handy considering some of the stuff we had in the car could have taken some real explaining to people with no idea.
No speckled racers that i saw so not so good on that front. I did get a boyfriend for "George" (yes George is a girl) and a few other bits, which i'll show you later on in the "what am i" thread
Then on the way back the car started making funny noises (chunk of plastic fell off from the engine) shortly followed by us developing a fuel leak So we spent more on fuel than the ferry!!
All in all an eventfull day, not one i would say was bad - we had a laugh, sorted a few people out, met some people and got a few bits - but could have gone MUCH smoother, ahwell such is life _________________ TFA

Glad you had a good show Taben, your stand looked very impressive (are you sure John made it??????).
Yep, your boy certainly added some excitement to the day, just glad it all end well and your relocation to the far reaches of Germany could be cancelled
Got to agree, the Brits certainly had some of (if not THE) best stands and animals...just a shame we have to take it to a foriegn country to sell it!
Not sure how well Darren's English flags went down at the show but they certainly made the place feel homely
My two van flags sadly blew away in France on the return _________________

oh yeah, I best confess the reason Euro Tunnel wouldn't let us straight on was because 'apparently' I booked my return ticket for JULY 11th...not June _________________
