I know this may seem daft to some of you but is Gila pronounced with an 'H' as in 'He-la'???

Just watching some program about envenomation the other night with a guy that bred Gila's and how their venom was been used in medical research.

He kept pronouncing it with an 'H', so I just wondered Question

I used to say it with a G, but in a book it said "H-ee-l-a"
I still use a G, it sounds better Laughing

All Mexicans and Americans I have heard when talking about them say it as if it were with an "H", Hee-lah.
A lot of British say it with the "G".
Seeing as the animals come from Mexico and parts of the States, I should say that the Mexican`s and American`s are therefore in the right. Only my way of thinking though. Wink
Anyway, I say it with an "H" but as a kiddie having only read books about them, I used to say it with a "G".

I've always heard of it being pronounced the Mexican way, with the 'H' sound Wink

No, good question.

It should be pronounced 'Hela', but many people say 'Gela'.

I'm not too fussed what people say, I can guess what they are talking about Wink Laughing

I heard it was pronounced as: welllller, but the guy saying it had a speech impediment so I guess not. Wink

I thought that was a damn good question Peaches, I often struggle to know the correct pronunciation of some herp names. When I have read about them in a book or on here I mentally say the name, then when speaking to someone and they say the name quite often it is way different from my version of the pronunciation! If you get my drift. Shocked

Thats what I normally do, heheheh, then if I get an odd look I just fix them with a stern stare ensuring I don't lose eye contact, it puts them off correcting me. Sometimes they even then pronounce it the same way I do whatever it may be. Laughing
