|
|
Hi guys,
I am interested in getting DWA license and am wondering what the steps involved are?
I live in north out London (Pinner) so I am not sure if the local council will allow it but there's no harm in asking
Is there any kind of mentoring needed? and if so where would one go about finding a mentor to teach and guide you?
I just moved back from the states where the laws are not as strict about venomous and crocodilean keeping ( some ways a good thing but mainly a bad thing)
Thanks for any and all help

Hi Paul,
There are currently NO set protocols for DWA reptiles, each local Authority will has (or write) it's own.
Here's a few suggestions for DWA http://captivebred.co.uk/dwwaainfo2.htm
Again, mentoring is NOT a requirement, I would however suggest that you should have the name and contact details of another DWA keeper that can help you if needed. _________________

wow thanks Scott, there's some great info there.
So how would people find out who has a DWA local to you if any one does?
I guess I will have to keep calling the council.
Thanks again mate. _________________ Paul

Hopefully the council will NOT tell you the names of any keepers with DWA licenses, that info could get into the wrong hands.
The best thing you can do is ask you local council if they have already issued DWA for venomous reptiles and if they have any set protocols they would expect, also in the mean time try joining either the International Herpetological Society or the British Herpetological Soceity (google for links ) _________________

As many people will be aware the protocol for getting a DWA varies from one Local Authority to the next one.
My LA charge £103 including vets charges and I believe they are one of the cheapest.
I've heard of others which charge huge fees which can be challanged in court as they are obliged to justify the charges applied.
Its worth pointing out that if you were to challange their fees they are very likely to come up with other obstructions to place in your way.
DWA's are and always will be contentious.
Having recently been bitten and had quite a severe reaction to the anti-venom administered in A&E and been on the reciept of some inappropriate post bite treatment i am the last one to preach (it was my own fault) but when people decide to go down the venomous snake route they need to think very very carefully............NO ONE KNOWS HOW THEY WILL REACT TO AN ENVENOMATING BITE OR TO THE ANTIVENOM.
I'll now get off my soapbox
PS also got SERUM SICKNESS a week later......just to remind me!! _________________ Live for today as your dead for a long long time
