I noticed in the favourite feeder insect poll that one member mentioned using slugs. I am interested in offering slugs to my tree monitors, but for various reasons I am loathe to offer them collected from the outside. Does anyone here breed slugs? Or maybe you could offer some advice on how and where you collect them from the wild.

Use small gravel around the base of the hostas about a 6 inch wide circle of it round them. Or introduce I think they are called nemotoads or something of the like, into the soil, these are tiny living organisms that get inside the slug and kill them, nice!
I have started a slug colony off as my salamanders larger frogs etc like them. The ones I am using are field, grey, white and netted slugs Deroceras Reticulatum et al.
Try to avoid the black, brown and leopard slugs (Arion and Limax species) these ones secrete a horrid tasting and very sticky secretion.
Your best bet is to buy a starter cutlure Dartfrog sell them. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

That's very odd I find it the other way around, my salamanders will eat the small black Arion slugs but most won't touch field slugs. _________________ Andrew Tillson-Willis
