As you know, I have three little hatchlings that are aquatics turtles. They are presently in a long 20 gallons aquarium set up. I had bought the set up with a filter system and it isn't doing a great job. So I went out to buy a better system. I explain my situation to the salesman and he advised me on getting a larger more powerful filter system. He explained that the turtles are very messy animal (I should have known right there and then that he doesn't know what the heck he is talking about. Turtles are reptiles not animals anyway), He mentioned that I will have to buy a much bigger aquarium when the turtle grows (which I have planned to do so) and mentioned that I should buy bigger so that I won't have to buy another filter in five years. He showed me this monster filter for 100 gallons. I laugh and told him my aquarium is 20 gallons and actually really holds 10 gallons since it is filled 1/2 way so that they can have land for basking. He said that my water would be so fine. Said you can always get a bigger filter for a smaller aquarium just not visa versa.
What the heck, money back guaranteed.
Bought it and spent 2 hours trying to figure it out. Once I got it going it practically suck my aquarium dry and the turtles and fishes were suck to the filter suction. The poor things couldn't move and must have been wondering what was happening to them. I unplugged the filter to release my turtles and the filter is going back.
Now I understand what the salesman meant when he said it would keep the water clean. What water???
So YES, there is such things has to big.
Bigger is not always better. |

Hehehehe. No big is not always better, but USA policy normally just that!
Turtles are animals Chantal.
The animal kingdom is split into Invertebrates and vertebrates.
Vertebrates are in turn split into Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles and Mammals.
I think you confused "Animal" for "Mammal". Plenty of people do.
So how many Turts do you have altogether now? Five? _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

Chantal, have you tried feeding them in a bowl of water of the right temperature? It`s what I used to do as they are very messy feeders. Saves on tank maintenance for sure. Just pop em in at feeding time, pop em back when they`ve finished _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

I am soooooo embarrass
Thanks for straightening that for me.
Yes I do have 5 turtles. You have a good memory because I know you do talk to a lot of different people all the time.
As for the USA policy, you are right on. They do think bigger is always better. It's not always the case. They SUPER SIZE everything. I believe quality is better than quantity.
We are also known for living beyond our abilities. I've worked in a bank in the pass and 95% of our clients couldn't and didn't pay the full amount on their Visa card every month. They only paid the minimum balance. That is an incredible percentage.
My job was to work with and arrange a financial plan to prevent my client from going bankrupt and losing their homes. I quite the day I realized I wasn't helping them. I would rearrange their finances so that they could breath better but instead of learning a lesson, they would see as having extra money to play with. Next thing I know, they have gone on an expensive trip (nothing but the best), gotten a pool, new car, etc... and are back in front of me asking for help again. So now instead of being $200,000 in dept, they are now $300,000. How did I help? I made things worst. If only I could have said that I have helped 1/2 of my clients but no. I believe I was lucky if 10% of them learned anything from me.
I have this client that I will never forget. He was about 35 years old, single with a large cowboy hat that went everywhere with him. I first meet him because he had come to me for a $10,000 personal loan. He showed me a picture of a gorgeous blond woman in her mid 20's and told me "You don't expect me to bring her to McDonald would you?" I turned down the loan and he was very upset with me. I told him that I was doing him a favor. About 6 months later, he showed up again. This time he was going bankrupt. He had gone elsewhere and had gotten himself a few diff loans. (By the way, the girl wasn't in the picture anymore either.) I felt bad for him and worked with him to resolve the issue. I had gotten him back on his feet and even gotten him a saving account so that he could build up for retirement plus he had $200.00 a week left for spending money once everything was paid up. He was golden. What does he do? He buys himself a Harley Davidson top on the line motorcycle that same week. Needless to say, he was sitting in front of me again in less than a year asking me to do my magic again. That is typical over here. You always want to live better than your neighbors. That way of thinking will gets you in trouble.
All that just to say that I got to go and return the filter for something smaller. |

No need to be embarrassed. Like I said, I`ve heard a lot of people make the same mistake. Perhaps because the words "mammal" and "animal" sound alike.
Yep, noticed the size obsession on both of my visits to the States. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD
