Thought any tegu keepers might find this interesting as I remember this being discussed on here in the past, and it was suggested that male tegus have more prominent cloacal spurs (bumps at base of tail) than females, who have smaller ones.

See below my recent post on another forum:

Quote:
ok. I have my 'pair' of CB04 merianae sourced from Bert at Agama Intl.

Animal 1. Larger overall (around 4 feet) with larger-looking head in proportion to body and much more jowly. Brighter black/white contrast. More confident and outgoing. Bumps near tailbase pronounced.

Animal 2. Same age but smaller (around 3 and a half feet). Head smaller in relation to body, less jowly, duller colours. More shy. Bumps near tail base much less pronounced.

Sounds like a sexed pair...

The female is roaming around my reptile room yesterday and poops on the carpet (not as funny as it sounds!). After, she drags her tail base on the carpet, and leaves a twin trail of whitish/translucent glutinous 'stuff'. To me these would be sperm plugs, making my she a he....However, I am fairly new to tegus, so just wanted to check....

Any thoughts? Also, the male has just started play mounting the 'female'.
Could 'she' just be a subordinate male?

Thanks,
Mark.

The feedback received was unequivocal. Respondees included a tegu breeder and a tegu biologist, who between them have examined hundreds and hundreds of tegus. Basically, female tegus do not have cloacal spurs of any size. If you have two animals, one with more prominent spurs than the other, then this simply reflects a dominant male and a subordinate male, and not a sexed pair.

So, the upshot of this is that I now have a surplus male tegu and need a female....

Mark.
