I have just ordered a yellow ackie its a CB04.Any useful tips in keeping the little guy?I'm gonna keep it in a 2 foot pennie viv to start with. A 40 watt heat bulb(with bulb guard like snakes?) on a dimmer stat and a Uv strip inside.I'm gonna build a couple of climbs for it to get near to heat bulb if it wants.I'm will keep it on newspaper but give it a box of sand to dig in what type I don't know, maybe a small cat litter tray or use a lunch-box with a hole cut in it? and obviously a water bowl and a couple of hides.Have I missed anything or do you have any suggestion?
Thanks |

Hi,
40 watts sounds way too low, it might work but check to see you can get a basking temp up to 120f, and a background heat of 80f.
I haven't found newspaper much good either, I now use calcium carbonate sand and also provide a nest box which has a sand/peat mix, slightly damp, this they will often sit in and rest.
As for a heat guard, I haven't used any and currently keep over 40 dwarf monitors and have never had a burn or injury but then I don't know how you will set your cage up.
good luck. _________________

I'm no expert on lizards but would have thought you would need a higher wattage bulb than that to get a decent basking area.I suppose if it can get close enough then you may get the temps within range. |

I dont know what a pennie viv is but ackies are excellent escape artists so if there is a small gap anywhere they will find it! |

just seen a post in the general section, Jas uses 40watt halogen dichroic spots, I guess they give a more concentrated spot and higher temp? _________________

Depends what type of spot light you are going to use and the background temp of the room the vivs in,i use 40watt dichroic spots in 4 foot vivs and they heat it fine, these lamps direct all heat downwards into a small area so are ideal for creating high basking spots, they are halogen so last much longer and are brighter than conventional filament lamps. |
