Well it's been a few years since I've been out looking for adders and such like, so I decided to take my gf for an exciting day out looking for reptiles! (can't say she looked as excited as me ).
We wandered off to a couple of old sites I knew, and within minutes we saw many common lizards, a good start! Slowly we made our way to an old bomb site that has since become a deep but small pond. As we approached a rather large grass snake crossed our path and hid in some bracken. Quite a few more lizards around, plus some newts in the pond.
We headed back towards the car park via another area which used to produce 5 - 10 adders every time I went there. After an hour of searching we finally found 1 coiled up in the sunshine, it stayed there just long enough for one good photo but disappeared when I changed lenses!
I was disapointed by the lack of adders, but will go back another day, a little earlier and try again.
Anyone else seen much this year?
Photos to follow tonight. |

Not been anywhere looking this year yet,
But last year went to a field in Benfleet a few times where there is loads of lizards and the odd adder.
As for newts its the second year running ive had these 2 smooth newts come into the stream by my pond but there both females so im tempted to get a male smoothy just to put in there with them. The stream is teaming with tadpoles at the mo. |

Went out early this morning, 7.00am. Air temperature was just 5c!!! The site were I saw the first adder was still in the cover of shadows but in other areas where the sun hit the ground, there were plenty of common lizards. I think I may of been there an hour too early as most places were shaded.
I don't believe the cold air temps would of stopped them coming out, if I have time, I look around 8ish tomorrow. |
