this my sound like a silly question and I apologize if it is.
Is there a genetic reason for breeding morphs to normals. Many people who have a number of royals tend to have quite a few normals in their collection. I'm looking to get four or five morphs to start with to get a good start with hatchlings. Is there a problem with this. I suppose ultimately I'm asking why breeders have such a large collection of normals if its the morphs that people are after.
Thanks |

It's basically a cheaper way of producing larger numbers of morphs.
If you breed a codominant male to loads of normal females you should, in theory, get 50% of the babies to be the same morph as the father. _________________ A lil bit of Madagascar

I thought that may be the case but morph to morph would produce 100% morphs and a higher clutch value wouldn't it? |

No, codominant 'A' x codominant 'B' would give
25% 'A'
25% 'B'
25% Normal
25% 'AB'
Codominant 'A' x codominant 'A' would give
50% 'A'
25% Normal
25% 'AA' _________________ A lil bit of Madagascar

The end results certainly are better breeding morph x morph, even two different morphs i.e a Pastel to a spider creating a new morph like a bumble bee.
It's all about your budget though, if you can afford to buy just morphs then that's great and speeds up and projects you may be thinking of. _________________

This is the thing I'm getting confused about... If someone would be so kind to put it in a punit square for me, with the genotypes from a codom mum and a codom dad and the final possible genotypes of the offspring?? Im a biologist at heart, i like to see things drawn out in front of me to get the proper picture _________________ Anna

With most of us it is purely the money aspect. With a wee bit of money a project can be started, babies sold, money used to buy the next morph etc. Would LOVE to be able to start with all morphs, but having huge amount of fun growing on my normal girls and getting morphs one by one Horses for courses an' all that

yeah i agree, its totally money why people use normals to breed to morph's.one thing you also have to bear in mind morph's havnt always been as reasonable as they are today id probly be able to buy 5 spider females now for what i paid for 1 spider female _________________ www.jamieswordsreptiles.com |
