Hi guys, im asking a lot of questions this evening!! Laughing

I read something a few minutes ago that made me question how i was going to heat my royals viv (3x2x2ft).

I was planning on using a heat mat with a mat stat, but i have just read that the do better as adults with a guarded Infra red bulb/ceramic. Is this true??? And what do you use?
Thanks again Very Happy

all mine the ones in tubs ,and the one in a viv, are on heat mats. they need belly heat to digest. the corns and hoggy and rat snake are on heat mats. the only one with a ceramic is the boa.

ceramic heaters with a guard work better for all python species because they have very little heat recepters in there belly scales and as they will spent most of there time sleeping on the ground then it can cause burns....but also it costs alot more to run a large heat mat than a ceramic heater or simpler product

tbh i prefer heat mats. and they do heat the air, you only have to open ayannas viv door to feel it. they are much easier to install, and if you are using tubs for any you would need a mat.

I prefer Lynne's way with supplemental back ground heating. So i'd use the heat matt in a viv as the main heat source .. belly heat... and then a really low watt bulb ~ 25W red bulb. this would just increase the ambients slightly. i like them to have about 80F in the cool end and 85F ambient heat in the hot end... the heat matt set at 90F.

We keep our irians the same as i would the royals, and i decided to buy a dimmer stat and have a 60W red bulb in there with a heat matt. I have the dimmer turned down to 85F in the hot end, and the cool end is about 80F... thats a 3 x 2 x 2ft tank. I have the heat matt set at 90F and thats it really.

for me it is heat mats for tubs and ceramic for vivs

mats are good as long as they can not come in direct contact, even with something over it water /wee will/can get on to the mat

i just think it is safer to have mats outside the tub and a nice big guard around the ceramic in the viv. just way of doing it Wink Laughing

we all have differant ways of doing, but i have to disagree with you here rad. there are ways of placing the heat mats in without there being any chance of wee or water coming in contact. i have always used heatmats inside vivs. my corns, ratsnake, hoggy and one royal are on them. there is more chance of me spilling my cranberry juice over the mats under the tubs than there is of widdle or water reaching the mats inside vivs.
