This species has proven almost impossible to keep alive in captivity, so, whilst the ultimate objective is to breed some, I will need to be able to keep them alive first!
We have reproduced as similar an environment and habitat to what they would experience and are keeping our fingers crossed.
They live at the edges of paddy fields and are documented as being somewhat aquatic. They do not, however in my observation, appear to be very comfortable in water and are quick to get out.
They are strange and seem to go into a deep sleep all day- to the point that you would think they are dead. Picked up they remain motionless for several minutes until they wake. They are very shy, secretive snakes.
So far we have been able to get one to feed on a small frog which is further than anyone else has got.
They do not show any interest in fish.
Keep your fingers crossed that they continue to do ok.
I will post updates as and when. If we get them feeding regularly, I will get some pictures but at the moment I will leave them with as little disturbance as possible. |
