I was lookibng at Helix thermostats but they seem only to be supplied for american use. is there nything over here at a similar quality?

Lucky Reptile Pro II. In my opinion the best stat on the market at present.

i use Lucky Reptile Thermo Control II but in my opinion there are a few things which could have been improved, but i believe these have been corrected in Lucky Reptile Thermo Control PRO II as it now has a realtime clock and two temperature circuits which make it possible to set different temperatures for day and night.

The lucky reptile are simple on/ off devices, made in China, that use a relay.
The helix product is only suitable for 110 volts.
Habistats have been around for 20 years, and whilst they don't have the gadgets they are ultra reliable and accurate and made in the Uk and have support and back up second to none.
Reliability should be you most important criteria when choosing a thermostat. Your animals life depends on it!
Oh and just so as you know, I make Habistats!
Watch out for a new one coming out towards the end of the Year. It is still under developement but, as a teaser will have the following features and more! And it will be manufactured in the UK.
Dimming. For use on any heaters from heat mats to light bulbs to ceramics.
Soft touch key pad.
Calibrated and accurate back lite digital read out.
Variable length cordsets and probe.
Real time clock.
Unlimited number of temperature changes in 24 hour period. Temperature changes ramp up and down over 5 minutes when changes are programmed.
Seperate timed on/ off outlet for fluorescents and other auxilliary components.
A completely seperate circuit and 5 degree over temp cutout to ensure there is no chance of unit failure and the heater remaining on. With reset button. Most thermostat failures are caused by heater (or its holder or wiring) problems. This unit will have overload/ short circuit protection that will detect voltage surge in milliseconds and protect the unit.
Power indicator will indicate the effective use of your heater. In other words if you have a heater thats too big for the temperature required then the indicator will show low consumption. This will enable the user to modify the heater size for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

I gotta say i use the Thermo Pro II also, great thermostats takes care of light and heat and also has an alarm incase anything goes wrong ... well unless its a powercut then we're all pretty screwed!

The new Habistat will come with present parameters to suit most needs but also has a battery backup to retain all settings in the event of a power failure.
Forgot to mention, it also has data logging facilities with minimum and maximum temperature recordings.
