I have a keen interest in venoms, the effects and the number of people killed each year. I have been catching venomous since I saw my first adder at the age of 5, and I am becoming more and more aware of the number of people in the professional and amateur side of herpetology dying each year from snakebites, some more famous than others, for instance the death of Joseph B. Slowinski. I would like to dedicate this thread to those who have lost their lives to snakebites, and ask the members to add their experiences of snakebite, and recent news articles about the topic including anything relating to large boids.
I think this is invaluable to those people considering keeping, working with or catching venomous snakes to really understand the risks, and we can all learn from every incidence of snakebite, regardless of how experienced we think we might be.
I saw this very sad article today

Joseph B. Slowinski

And another that springs to mind

Thanks

Hi all,
I have read these articles on venomlist, the Black Mamba story is very sad,as is any snake bite death, but if anybody thinks a Black Mamba might not have injected venom after a bite, they are asking for trouble.
People must remember venomous snake bite is a medical emergency, it is your responsability to seek medical aid as soon as possible, not to play at being a Doctor, the first aiders should have known better.
All the best,
Brian. _________________ All venoms are poisons but not all poisons are venoms |

How incredibly sad regarding that Black mamba death, I have to wonder if he had recieved prompt medical attention if the outcome may have been a little different. I am totally shocked that they continued with the lecture. _________________ Cheers Angi

Yeah that was my initial thought, when I read it a while ago, also I know sometimes its hard to judge but he shouldnt of been waving his arms around within strike range either, still always sad to see someone killed R.I.P _________________ Theres nothing right on the left side of my head and nothing left on the right |
