Hi,

My first young of 2008 - Egernia cunninghami. Pics taken when about ten days old.

This 5 year old female produced two babies in August 2007, and another two six months later in February 2008.

Cheers,
Mark.

Beautiful babies!

I had some young adults for a while. Apparently when kept in groups, once in a while one is cast out and won't be accepted back into the group. I was given the outcasts to study to see if I could get them to form a group. (There was some studying being done about this outcasting.)

Apparently pair bonding occurs in these skinks too.

Here are some interesting articles you might like to look at (not from the people I worked with though)...

Thanks for the comments guys.

In terms of the group dynamics, I have seen this 'outcast' process in the flesh. I started with a group of 2.2 and they turned on one of the females -killing her in the process. I am trying to introduce new animals into the group, but not having much joy...

I don't have many good pics of the adults but here are a couple of darkish ones.

Cheers,
Mark.

This casting out of females as well as males baffles me. It means its not just a male trying to keep a "harem".

It is definitely a challenge to get a new animal accepted to the group too which again can be baffling if its a female.

The outcasts that I was given would not form a group either. I had two that were cast out of the same group that remained together...but no others were accepted.

BTW...you said..."Thanks for the comments guys"....I'm no guy! Smile

Oops - I meant it in the mixed-sex way. Honest. Embarassed

I don't know how it makes sense to drive a female out of a well-established group or why it should be so hard to incorporate a new female, which is what I'm trying at the moment.

Have you come across any observations on the merits of leaving the young in with the adults vs taking them out? I have chickened out and removed the young both times so far, but am tempted to leave them in - at least that way I can introduce new animals, even if they are related. Maybe a larger group is more flexible about new arrivals???

Cheers,
Mark.
