There's loads of Grass snakes at Chambers wood near Bardney, as for Adders, Scotton Common up near Scunny, and around Kirkby-on-Bain, especially Kirkby Moor and Moor Farm. |

Stuart, im not shouting, just to say that i was bitten by an adder a few years ago and it was easily the most embarasing and unpleasant experience in my life & just one fang!!
Brilliant photos though _________________ http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Bird-fly/

Believe me, getting tagged by one of these is not something I have a total disregard for. I'm careful to gauge the mood of the snake well before any attempt is made to handle it, also I don't restrict the animal, just allow it to move through my hands as it wants. I'm very careful to minimise the potential risk to what I consider to be an acceptable level. Out of interest, where and how were you bitten? |

I picked one up behind the head/neck area and left it a bit too much room to Maneuver and it sunk one fang into my thumb. My mate insisted he took me to hospital (i wouldnt have gone, on the understanding that it only effects the old and the young )
When i got there 75 mins later i nipped of to find the mrs who was visiting her mum in hospital and told her "dont go with out me as i've just been bitten by an adder and shouldn't be long"?
Anyway they gave me an injection (not an antivenom) but some thing that sounded like an old 2nd world war drug?? cant remember the name of it, then it hit me, dont know if it was the viper venom or the injection?
But i got rid of every thing!!!! and didnt wake up for two days, still very ill, i was about 35 at the time and fit and strong (builders labourer) it just wiped me out, could have been super sensative i supose but thats very unlike me, i still wonder if it was the injection cause i was alright for nearly 2 hours.
Any way i wasn't having a go i was just concerned, i've seen some of your posts on different forums and you always know what your doing and talking about, just be careful _________________ http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Bird-fly/

I had one the other day tried exactly the same thing! Fortunately I was a bit quicker than him. By the sounds of it, it was whatever they jabbed you with that knocked you back. If you were alright 2 hours after the bite then I wouldnt've thought that it was going to hit you much, if at all. Thanks for the advice, but the "I bloody told you so" and subsequent lectures from the Mrs would be far worse than the bite itself and serves to ensure I am careful.
Edit: I know who you are now! Birdfly & Lupus from BN............. |

Sorry mate but that is stupid adder image I've seen in years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you get bitten and it ends up in the press (they have ways of find out) it gives the Adder a bad press.
Working in conservation and particularly with Adders for 20
+ years and having been bitten (my fault) in the past I would NEVER free handle one as its plain stupid.
Just because an Adder seems calm does not mean its not going to tag you..Fact!!!
To publish the image of you free handling one is reckless and offers a very poor view.
Sorry if this ticks you and anyone else off but act like a fool you'll get called one!!!!!!!!!!!
