Can anyone keeping tegus or medium/large sized monitors advise on appropriate glass thickness?

I have built a new viv for my tegus, and this will have two sets of glass sliding doors, with a divider in the middle. Each piece of glass will be approx. 24" high and 30" long.

Will 4mm toughened glass be ok or do I need to go for 6mm. If so, does it need to be toughened?

Cheers,
Mark.

4mm toughend should be fine, 6mm would be far too heavey at that size.

Thanks Scott. I'll go with the 4mm unless I hear otherwise.

Mark.

I once built 300 aquariums for a fish importer made of 4mm toughened glass. I built a couple of 24x15x12s to 'test to destruction'.

Full of water...

I dropped a 3 KG 'live rock' into them from about 4 foot above. fine

I dropped a claw hammer into one from about 6 foot. fine

A 1kg rock bounced off the front of one from an underarm throw of about 6 feet. fine

One smashed when I overarm bowled a claw hammer at it from about 10 feet away.

Conclusion is that they are much stronger than normal glass made tanks, surprise surprise, but when they break they BREAK into a million bits... easily strong enough for a tegu etc and as Scott says, a lot lighter

I like laminated glass for that reason. If it does break there arent a million pieces to pick up and usually the door stays in place any way so an instant escape doesnt happen. Obviously it isnt secure but it is much better to have something in there rather than nothing while you panic like hell, calm down and sort the problem.
