Ive been keeping my rankins dragon on repticarpet for a while now and wanted to switch because ive heard that the repticarpet builds up with bacteria and it becomes very dirty.

I asked Paul at Coldblooded yesterday and he said that alot of beardie breeders keep their beardies and babies on calcisand and has never had a problem. This calcisand is calcium carbonate one and if she eats little bits its not gunna harm her.

Ive put it in her tank last night and was told to only put a thin layer down.

Has anyone had any problems with calcisand?
Id just be devastated if I lost her. I know i shouldnt have a favourite out of my babies but Dante is so special to me, id never forgive myself if I
lost her.

I have never used it myself but i have read that they lick it because it is calcium and it can last in a beardies stomach for something like 30 years.
I use play/bird sand with my desert ones.

from what ive read clci sand can build up in the beardies digestive system and as geckoguy says it clumps up . causing impactation ..

if your beardie is still young id use tiles or lino , when it gets bigger you could switch to play sand . .

i feed my beardie in the viv but keep the live food in a tub . that way there is minimum chance to eat sand

Ive never used Sand before. I have used light wood chips, but changed as found they were eating this. Now I use Vegetable hemp - its NOT the wet hemp that people first think of, this is made purely with dried veg, it is a similar look to the light woodchips, but it is 100% digestible. Many horse keepers use it as bedding for horses too. Its not well known, but Ive been using it for years as have a lot of my friends. My beardie male is over 10 years now and Ive just lost my female at 10 years (old age) and never had a problem with it. Plus it looks pretty nice too! and they love to dig in it Smile

hmmm, now theres a question! I buy it from my local reptile store. Where abouts are you? My friends also buy it from this store too. But im guessing horse folk wont be buying it from a reptile store! Im away from 2 weeks, so when I go back to the reptile store Il ask him where is easiest for you.
For babies - until 5-6 months old I used to just keep them on paper - like old newspaper- so they did not swallow any bedding with feed!

Just after I posted that, I found this wesbite, I think its the one I use.

http://www.blagdonreptilehouse.co.uk/hemp-bedding_431.htm

It doesnt retain moisture from spraying like the woodchips. If you have a lot of vivs, the big bags are best, but they do go a long way! I think I used 2kgs to cover a 4ftx2ft viv bottom. (dont trust me on that!) If you need a big bag, horse suppliers are normally cheaper!

Hope that helps
