i would love to look after silk backs and if there was no different behavior or needs you should attempt to breed them but only if you can get an unrelated pair.

Yes colour mutations are "natural" as are silk backs, but obviously an albino for example that is produced in a wild population, is unlikely to survive as it is more likely to be spotted and eaten by a predator. But humans choose what animals to breed from and can predict what the result will be. We can keep pushing to get the animal whiter or darker or whatever. So that part of it is not natural. One thing that this hobby has generally done SO FAR is not to try to make reptiles bigger or smaller, or with bigger heads or shorter feet etc like dog/cat (and other animal) breeders have done. I think there is a slippery slope here, that the silk back maybe is at the start of. If a beardy is bred with shorter feet as the result of a "natural mutation", and some people thought it looked cute, would we want to see that being bred/ sold ? I hope not !!

I reserve judgement with the silkback for now. I worry about the fact that leathery scales are there for a good reason, so who knows yet what problems these animals will have as a result ? Will they be more sensitive to UV light ?

But to put this into perspective I think that albinos are more sensitive to light than normal animals ? So you may not want them lynne for making money from (the albino royal), but you almost certainly will be supporting somebody (with hard cash !) who does. I don't think there is much difference.

i know for a fact this isnt right. i know who i buy my snakes from, and believe me, they are not in it to make money from them. all reps that they do sell, and they keep more than sell, are always kept in touch with.
and tbh even if i did buy from someone doing it to make money, im not, so thats fine by me. i would rather give something to a good home, than sell it to a bad one. but im lucky, i dont have to sell or even give any of mine away.
am not downing anyone, each to thier own thing.

Lynne, I have thought about it today and realize I was probably being unfair in what I said. Anyway I can't see a problem making money out of reptiles if they are not suffering in the process. I think we would probably agree there.

we would mark. although i have a reputation for keeping everything i breed. horses, and i had umpteen hutches in the garden at one point. i dont actually know if i could sell on any hatchlings, i couldnt sell any in my collection, i do know that. but its the reps and animals welfare that should always come first.
