Been doing some walking recently, so had the oppertunity to see some newts and frogs etc.

About three weeks ago, I saw a mass spawning in Dawsholm park, Glasgow.
Heres some snaps of the park itself:

And heres some of the frogs, spawning away:

I came back a fortnight after these photos were taken, and unfortunately the water level had fallen, causing many clumps to dry out. Several of the deeper ones had hatched, and there were a good few more under the water with a few days to go. I estimated that there were around 100 females when I saw them spawning, so you can imagine - thats a lot of spawn!

At the same site i saw two female palmates:

My wander took me along the canal, where I went to check up on a known newt colony. Unfortunately, of all the piles of rubbish and rubble in Glasgow, the council had decided to clean up this one, leaving only a few stones for the newts to hide under. Normally i'd see heaps of palmates and smooths, but this time only a couple of smooth newts. I was quite gutted...

The next day, I walked from my house in Glasgow, out to milngavie and along the west highland way (only as far as Mugdock castle though!) I was acosted by this young gentleman on the way:

I found a couple more palmates around the lochan of the Castle.

yesterday, we drove over to Aviemore to do a little bit of walkign around Loch Morlich and the Green Lochan... I was amazed to find that, despite the snow, there was frogspawn in almost every gully beside the paths.

to give you an idea of how snowy:

Got the pics now. Wink

Sam, could I persuade you to have a look here; http://www.narrs.org.uk/natamphibsurvey.htm
& perhaps help out with surveying? If you are walking the sites a few times in the spring/summer then you could make a valued contribution to the widespread amphibian and reptile survey which started last year.

Enjoyed your post, good to see such healthy populations of frogs. Cool

Ive spoken to the local reptile and amphibian group about doing some volunteering for them - I'll check out that link and see if its the same lot.

Its good to see you back on again Peter, I trust that patterdale pup is doing well? We got ourselves another border recently.

Thanks everyone for your comments, and i'm definitely interested in helping any way i can with surveys etc.
