Another case of mans inhumanity to man. Generations of small girls had their feet bound tightly in China. It caused the deformities that are shown in the photos. Only recently has the practice been more or less stopped, as is shown by women still living who have their feet crippled in this way.
The bandaging stays on usually for life as it is very painful to take it off. The lady in the photos must have first taken hers off a long time ago - but of course the damage had been done already.
It explains why older generations of Chinese women used to walk in a dainty ( ??!! ) bird-like way. Because it is done by parents to their very young daughters, it was the adult generation who had to be convinced to stop the practice. |

Ah I heard about this. I think it's a process of breaking many of the bones in each foot as an infant and shaping it so they can have small feet which they (apparently) find prettier. I think they're called 'Lilly feet'. |
